Doc Rivers happy with Shake Milton, Sixers bench in loss to Celtics

The Philadelphia 76ers got off to a rough start on the road on Wednesday against the Boston Celtics. The starters couldn’t get into a rhythm and they had a tough time even getting open looks let alone knocking them down.

The Sixers needed a spark and coach Doc Rivers turned to his bench early. With Tyrese Maxey getting off to such a rough start, he decided to go to Shake Milton. The veteran out of SMU shot 5-for-5 in the opening quarter for 12 points to keep Philadelphia in the game. The rest of the Sixers combined to shoot just 3-for-18 in the first quarter.

Milton led a big effort from the bench unit as they received 12 points from Georges Niang and big nights from Andre Drummond and Matisse Thybulle as well.

“He was really good,” said Rivers. “We needed a lift and really the bench in general. I thought they came in in both halves. First half, they came in and got the lead. Second half, they kept the lead. Drum’s energy was great, I thought Shake was great, I thought Matisse had a hell of a game defensively tonight as well on (Jayson) Tatum overall.”

If it wasn’t for Milton and the bench, the Sixers probably would have been blown out. The starting unit just didn’t have it in this one from the jump and they took a while to really get into any type of rhythm. Milton gave a big spark.

“Just trying to be aggressive,” said Milton. “Come in and bring energy. Just coming in and having some bounce and some pop to you. That’s just what I tried to do.”

The Sixers will now have to bounce back when they head south to take on the Atlanta Hawks on Friday for the second game of this 4-game trip.
